Twilight slinks westward
a sullen, fearful thing
whose master finally sleeps.
Iowa night remains;
the sun's sultry legacy.
Furrowed soil is my refuge,
framing my half-naked form.
Shifty leaves ward the heat
and brush at stars above.
My fingers probe the earth,
finding moisture,
finding evening.
I am cradled, complete.
I am Adam
and from this dirt God made me.
a sullen, fearful thing
whose master finally sleeps.
Iowa night remains;
the sun's sultry legacy.
Furrowed soil is my refuge,
framing my half-naked form.
Shifty leaves ward the heat
and brush at stars above.
My fingers probe the earth,
finding moisture,
finding evening.
I am cradled, complete.
I am Adam
and from this dirt God made me.
